Determinants of capillary permeability: a review of mechanisms based on single capillary studies in the frog.

چکیده
THE objective of this article is to examine two complementary hypotheses that, together, describe the role of the intercellular junction in the regulation of capillary permeability. One hypothesis states that the permeability of capillaries with continuous endothelium is modulated by the area available for the diffusion of small solutes in the spaces between adjacent endothelial cells. The second hypothesis states that the entry of solute into the junctional pathway and the diffusion of solute within the junctional pathway are regulated by the size and distribution of a network of fibrous molecules within the wide part of the junction. Transport through the junction may also be modulated by charge and specific chemical interactions between the solute and side chains on the fibrous network. When evaluating recent research designed to test the two hypotheses, I will draw mainly on experimental data obtained on individually perfused capillaries in frog mesentery and frog muscle. For these capillaries, methods have been developed to measure the permeability properties of the capillary wall under conditions where the area for transcapillary exchange and the forces determining exchange across the capillary wall are directly measured. Many of the problems to be discussed in this review were identified first from experiments on the microvascular bed in whole organs. Studies based on single capillaries enable the mechanisms of exchange across the capillary wall to be studied directly, removing some of the uncertainties that arise when 1) microvessels, having a range of permeability properties, contribute to exchange in a whole microvascular bed, 2) it is not possible to obtain a precise measurement of exchange area, and 3) the forces determining exchange at the capillary wall (hydrostatic pressure difference, solute concentration difference) are estimated indirectly from measurements in large arteries and veins. A Biomechanical Approach for the Study of Deformation of Red Cells in Narrow Capillaries
This model focuses on the behavior of capillary-tissue fluid exchange system when the diameter of the capillary is less than that of red cell. In vivo and in vitro observations indicate that the width of the gap between the red cell and the vessel wall is generally small compared to the radius of the capillary for a single file flow of red cell in narrow vessel, particularly if the vessel diame...
متن کاملPositive Coupling Effect in Gas Condensate Flow Capillary Number Versus Weber Number
Positive coupling effect in gas condensate reservoirs is assessed through a pure theoretical approach. A combination of linear stability analysis and long bubble approximation is applied to describe gas condensate coupled flow and relative permeability, thereof. The role of capillary number in gas condensate flow is clearly expressed through closed formula for relative permeability. While the m...
متن کاملAn Efficient Method for Determining Capillary Pressure and Relative Permeability Curves from Spontaneous Imbibition Data
In this paper, a very efficient method, called single matrix block analyzer (SMBA), has been developed to determine relative permeability and capillary pressure curves from spontaneous imbibition (SI) data. SMBA mimics realistically the SI tests by appropriate boundary conditions modeling. In the proposed method, a cuboid with an identical core plug height is considered. The equal dimensions of...
متن کاملThe permeability of single capillaries to potassium ions
This paper reports a description of methods for determining the diffusional permeability to potassium ions of single capillaries in the frog mesentery. By means of micropipettes, injections or infusions were delivered into a single capillary. The subsequent concentration variations in and about the capillary were followed with K(+)-sensitive microelectrodes. A theoretical analysis is provided w...
متن کاملRenal Capillary Hemangioma Mimicking Urothelial Carcinoma, A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Renal hemangioma is a rare tumor which can be capillary or cavernous. There have been less than 30 renal capillary hemangioma cases reported in the English literature. Herein we will report a case of renal hemangioma which was detected in a 74-year-old man operated with the impression of urothelial carcinoma of hilum.
